In 1779, when genteel Virginia spinster Roxanna Rowan arrives at the Kentucky fort commanded by Colonel Cassius McLinn, she finds that her officer father has died. Penniless and destitute, Roxanna is forced to take her father's place as scrivener. Before long, it's clear that the colonel himself is attracted to her. But she soon realizes the colonel has grave secrets of his own--some of which have to do with her father's sudden death. Can she ever truly love him? Readers will be enchanted by this powerful story of love, faith, and forgiveness from reader favourite Laura Frantz. Her solid research and deft writing immerse readers in the world of the early frontier while her realistic characters become intimate friends.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

I didn’t think I’d like this book because of the setting but I was so captivated I was really sad when I got to the end. I had spent a week being submerged in this fairly long book wanting to know more. The epilogue was a nice addition to the book which pacified my curiosity. I know so little about American settlement history but Frantz makes it effortless as she combines this love story with the Kentucky frontier territory battles of 1779 and the cultures of that time. The main female character Roxanna Rowan has real spunk but is also genteel and feminine through and through which for her is an asset in the outnumbered male environment she finds herself in, and her qualities I envied as I think about myself working in a male dominated role. Although just a story, I felt challenged by Rowan as a character and found myself wanting to be more like her. A charming happily ever after story.
