When her prodigal brother Reef's return to Yancey, Alaska, is shattered by his arrest for murder, Piper McKenna is determined to protect him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. And he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth puts Landon's career in jeopardy.

When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes he must protect her from herself--and whatever complications await as the two follow clues deep into Canada's rugged backcountry. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.

This is a crime story set in Alaska, easy to read, containing romance, and with a Christian flavour. The crime story: Policer Deputy Landan Grainger embarks on a search for a murderer. He is accompanied by the feisty Piper McKenna. (Would that happen in real life, I wonder?). She is determined to prove the innocence of her brother, Reef, who has been arrested for the crime, with much evidence pointing to his guilt, Landon comes to agree with her. The search enlists the help of Piper's very sporty family. It ranges over great distances, with moments of tension and suspense, until the unexpected identity of the killer emerges and he is apprehended. The romance? You've probably guessed. Landon and Piper fall in love. And how about the Christian flavour? The author is herself a Christian. She says that she'd be lost without Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, and her wish is, May every story be for your glory. She doesn't lay her faith on too thickly in the story, but Piper and most of her family are Christians, and words of testimony are sometimes put on their lips. Landon moves from his earlier scepticism to recognition of the power of prayer. If you appreciate a fairly light crime story, you'll probably enjoy this one.

This is Pettrey?s exciting follow-up to the adventure-filled Submerged (2012). Readers rejoin the McKenna family as they search for the real killer of the woman their brother, whose innocence looks dubious, is accused of murdering. Piper McKenna knows her brother is innocent and will do anything it takes to prove it. A family friend, Deputy Landon Grainger, will do anything it takes to protect Piper, so the two set off on a harrowing journey to track the true murderer. With the family backing them up from Yancey, Alaska, Piper and Landon set out from western Canada, traveling down to California and then back up to Oregon on their quest for the truth. Despite the mounting danger, the two start to question their feelings for each other. Will their search be for love as well as for justice? With the drama of an Alaskan winter as her setting, Pettrey once again blends suspense, romance, and mystery into a fast-paced story that will keep readers on their toes.
