‘The Skin Map’ is a time-travelling fantasy like nothing you’ve read before. Let the epic treasure hunt begin.

Kit Livingstone was walking to the train in a storm when his great-grandfather appears and tells him he possesses an inherited gift – to travel between alternate realities. Throughout Britain, ancient monuments are mysteriously aligned in straight lines. These ‘Ley Lines’ are not stuff of legend nor the weekend hobby of history geeks, but doorways which transport you through the cosmos of our multi-layered world, to those who know how to use them.

An explorer of sorts once mapped out his discoveries. Travelling through time and space he developed a roadmap of symbols that he tattooed on his body. Now the Skin Map is thought to hold the single greatest answer to humanities existence – the secrets of the universe. The race has begun in the first book of the Bright Empire five-volume series to recover the missing pieces, uncover its hidden secrets and find the ultimate prize beyond imagining.

Stephen R. Lawhead, acclaimed author of several fantasy series, masterfully criss-crosses many different fiction genres – adventure, ancient history, sci-fi, mystery and philosophy – crafting a page-turning quest that’s out of this world.

Set in 17th century and 21st century London, the Enlightenment-era court of the Hapsburgs, China during the Qing Dynasty and ancient Egypt, Bright Empires is a five-volume fantasy.

In The Skin Map, Kit Livingstone and his great- grandfather, Cosimo, are brought together to find a map originally tattooed on the skin of its author, a seventeenth-century explorer who had discovered the secret of access to other worlds and parallel universes. Malign forces are also after the map and, to the surprise of all, the map proves to be not the end of the quest but its beginning. A far greater prize remains, and a much more dangerous search will need to be undertaken.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Stephen Lawhead is to my mind a wonderful author with some stunning books and series to his name and with this the first book in a new series, he is yet again showing why he already has a best selling track record. This book is a time jump drama, something I've always had a penchant for, but add into this the slight steampunkesque feel to it and for me it's a winner. The main story is that of Kit, ordinary man of today whose day is not going to plan, who somehow meets his great-grandfather who had gone out many years ago and never returned and in turn ends up on an adventure that crosses timelines and localities. There is a great collection of back stories in the book too and some quite funny interludes, as future and past meet, blend and spin off each other. If you like modern fantasy and time jump stories then you probably can't go wrong with this book - and you'll probably look forward to the next one in the series too.
