One way in which Fresh Expressions of church are springing into life is through 'new monastic' or 'intentional' communities, groups of individuals and families living in the same geographic area or connected virtually who share a simple rule of life.

Cave ~ Refectory ~ Road explores how traditional monastic life is helping to shape a new flowering of Christian community today.

It traces the roots of 'new monasticism' and draws on the classic elements of monastic life to suggest how this ancient wisdom, learning and spiritual practice might be reinterpreted for new settings.

A handbook for all who are exploring 'intentional living', its rich and inspiring teaching is clustered around these themes:

The cave: the place of stillness, prayer and withdrawal that can inspire a new engagement with the mystery of God,

the refectory: how monastic practices of hospitality can create communities that make a difference in the world

and the road: how the example of the friars can lead to creative and loving engagement with public life.

This year, a new TV series based on The Monastery will be broadcast - just one sign of the surge in popularity of monastic spirituality

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

The enigmatic title – not an address as I first imagined! – represents what the author sees as the three expressions of monasticism: solitary prayer and contemplation; hospitality, serving the community; and mission. Subtitled ‘monastic rhythms for contemporary living’, the book attempts to draw from Christianity’s long tradition of the cloister strands that may enhance and improve the Spiritual ‘walk’ of those of us who choose to stay in the world. While extolling the benefits of a structured life, the book itself does not seem to be structured in a logical way, and the chapters do not lead on smoothly one from another. Reading it simply out of interest, as I did, this was not a problem, but anyone looking for a real sense of the effect of monastic values on their life might find the style somewhat frustrating. This said, several website addresses are given where further, more detailed, information can be found. An intriguing introduction to a deep subject.
