The Christian Belief for Everyone series comprises five guides to the basic ideas of the Christian faith. Full of stories and helpful illustrations, these guides have been written primarily for ordinary churchgoers, though they will no doubt also appeal to interested readers outside the church.

The approach Alister McGrath adopts is non-denominational, very similar to the 'mere Christianity' advocated by C. S. Lewis. Indeed, the series may be seen as a guide to 'mere Christianity', focusing clearly as it does on the life of faith. We look at why Christians believe what they do; how we can best understand these ideas, and the difference they make to the way we think about ourselves and our world.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is the second book in the Christian Belief for Everyone series that explores the basic ideas of the Christian faith. In this volume Alister McGrath looks at the nature of God exploring the well known words "I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth". The author takes us gently by the hand and leads us into an exploration of the nature of the Godhead. He writes in a conversational style explaining deep truths in an understandable way. The book is packed with helpful illustrations and interesting quotes from the great Christian theologians. Many subjects are covered including the nature of God, the problem of evil and the Trinity. His answers are usually sure footed and in line with mainstream Christian teaching. There were a couple of times when Mr McGrath's clear thinking lets him down. He seems to accept that we can address God as "she" ignoring the Biblical evidence. He also accepts the Big Bang theory without question and fails to answer the question of why and when death came into the world. Aside from these quibbles this is an excellent book that is well worth reading.
