Even in today's world, there is still a suggestion that women can be restricted by the cultural expectations of their sex's behaviour. More specifically, women may be more likely to turn away from God's call and hold back for the sake of cultural norms.

Danielle Strickland maintains that it is the church who should assume lead and challenge this social norm. The church is the one with witnesses of the holy spirit- the holy spirit who has repeatedly demonstrated his desire for women to fulfill their potential.

Strickland splits the book into several sections including the situation as it is today (exploitation vs subjugation), the historical situation (feminism and the Christian tradition), material from the bible, and the future situation and what the church should take responsibility for.

At a time when the role of women in the church and whether it should include leadership is a matter of heated debate in Anglican circles, this is a timely and completely ecumenical look at the subject by a Canadian Salvation Army officer. Frustrated by the restrictions put on Godly and anointed women by a male-dominated church, Danielle Strickland delves into the traditions and consequences of regarding women as a sort of inferior sub-species, followed up with an exploration of the Biblical texts used to justify this and how they are frequently wrenched out of their context and cultural setting or perniciously mistranslated, as with Psalm 68:11. Some of the spiritual abuses she describes may well be more a feature of the American continent, as I have never encountered or heard of them happening in Britain; others are only too familiar, and will be, I suspect, to many female Christians. Danielle reminds us that slavery was once upheld as Biblical and therefore God-endorsed and yet is now abhorrent to all; the day may come when the denial of women as equal partners in His Kingdom is looked back on in much the same way.
