My hometown of Onicha-Ugbo in Aniocha North Local Government Council of Delta State is a fast developing Community comprising of five Villages viz: Ogbeobi, Ogbekenu, Ishiekpe, Umuolo and Agba. I am the traditional head (Diokpa) of Ogbekenu Village by virtue of which I am an okenye ani( member of the obi-in-council) ie the Community's supreme ruling council under the headship of the paramount ruler, the Obi.Each Village enjoys a measure of autonomy and adjudicates on inter Communal issues or such matters referred to it from any of the quarters that make up the Village. Ogbekenu has eight quarters. Usually, disputes are handled at the quarter level and only referred to the Village on appeal and to the obi in council as a court of final or supreme arbitration.I have lived in Warri for the past thirty eight years and recently retired from work together with my wife. This freedom from employment and business gave me ample time to participate more actively in the governance of our town and Village. But it made me a constant traveller from my Warri base, an exercise I considered both risky and laborious. I decided therefore to relocate to Asaba which is only a twenty minute drive away from my town. I also decided to renovate my village residence to enhance its convenience and facilties for improved comfort due to these my frequent visits.I spent a clear one month at home during the month of July to supervise this renovation. I was therefore able to attend to a series of Community matters and constantly attended meetings of the obi in council as well as convoke vital meetings of my village.
