‘Outrageous Courage’ is the true story of the courageous missionary, Tracy Evans, who has lived with radical obedience in war-torn countries, Communist nations, Muslim dominions and the poorest of slums.

Ever since she parked her motorcycle outside of Bethel Church, in Redding, California, Tracy has been impacting lives and risking it all for the gospel. ‘Outrageous Courage’ is her missionary story, told by her close friends and mentor Kris Vallotton and his son, Jason. Real stories like:
• When Tracy was shipwrecked then taken hostage by Gorilla Rebels on an Asian Island
• When Tracy was sipping tea with bullets whistling past in Mozambique
• When Tracy hosted seminars for important government officials

This short book reads more like an action movie, or a fast-paced novel than a biography. And amazingly it’s all real-life, it all actually happened! Many books claim to be life-changing, but few can live up to the description –it’s books like ‘Heavenly Man’, ‘The Hiding Place’, ‘God Smuggler’ & ‘Outrageous Courage’ that motivate genuine transformation in the reader.

30 years on the mission field will undoubtedly yield countless stories that would make the average Christian stumble over their driveway and head butt their privileged lifestyle. Yet many of us have aspirations to go on daring adventures into faraway lands with our Bibles and a suitcase of sun tan lotion to proclaim good news, love people and get stuck in.

If you’re one of these people, I’d recommend reading a missionary biography – like Tracy Evans book, ‘Outrageous Courage’. They give you a window into the life of a missionary, the immense cost and the worth-while reward. Not only will it open your eyes to the needs of our hurting and torn up world, it will prepare you for the eventuality that doing mission work will also hurt and rip you into pieces.

Tracy’s church history threads back to Bethel Church, in Redding, California. She rode her motorbike up to the church one day and got talking to Kris Vallotton, now one of the pastors. Bill Johnson, world-respected pastor and speaker, is close friends with Tracy and mentors her. It’s interesting to read how he opens the book in the preface:

“… there are few people in the world I fear as much as Tracy. I realize that may not sound biblical to some, or even healthy, yet the most honest expression of my heart is “I fear God in Tracy.” – taken from the Preface in ‘Outrageous Courage’, Bill Johnson.

You’re right Bill, that does seem strange. But he goes on to explain the reason for the title of this book – Outrageous Courage. Tracy Evans has supernatural courage, and that is very scary.

This book illustrates one big lesson for budding missionaries – the cost is great, but the rewards are greater. Tracy’s short book illustrates that genuine growth in Christ doesn’t happen in the safety of church, the classroom or morning devotionals. It happens when if God doesn’t intervene, you will fail, or even die.

Travelling to a war-torn country is nothing short of crazy, why would anyone with an ounce of sanity go? You need supernatural, outrageous courage. Inside Tracy’s book you read about all the experiences she has dealt with, the truma, the near-death experiences, the heart-ache – but you also tatse the rewards. Tracy is probably one of the strongest Christians alive! Spiritually, mentally and emotionally!

“Outrageous Courage will not disappoint. Read it hungry, and you will finish it hungrier. It does more than satisfy; it launches the reader on a quest—a partnership for something new.” – taken from the Preface in ‘Outrageous Courage’, Bill Johnson.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This book is the story of Tracey Evans, a nurse who has taken the Gospel and practical love to some of the most dangerous and unpleasant places in the world. We read of her working amongst prostitutes in Los Angeles, rubbish heap scavengers in the Philippines and HIV sufferers in Africa. The book is written in the first person being based on interviews with Tracey and published with her full permission. In the book she bares her soul speaking of her mistakes, her struggles and her joys. What shines through is first how God can transform hardened sinners (which she was herself) and second what a live devoted to God can achieve. The book is rightly entitled Outrageous Courage as her actions are brave, sometimes reckless, but never selfish. I could not agree with all her theology, or methods. I cannot endorse the way she speaks to God nor the way she says that God guides her through dreams and visions. I found those parts of the book a little disturbing. However if you are able to look beyond this then the book has something to teach us about sacrificial service to the Lord.
