Forgotten saint? Proto-feminist? Josephine Butller's story is one of incredible passion and tenacity and deserves to be better known. She had a deep concern for the marginalized of Victorian society, she reached out to the poor and destitute, campaigned and worked tirelessly to bring about the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act; spoke out on subjects that shocked her contemporaries and remained strong and determined against all kinds of injustice . This is a lively and well-drawn portrait which also delves into her personality and reveals the deep faith that sustained her in her work.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

A slim, very readable volume which my husband read and described as “perfect for a church bookstall”, but which also has hidden depths and insights. Josephine Butler is now remembered in the Anglican calendar, and is being rediscovered not only as a dedicated social reformer, but also as a woman of strong faith and deep spirituality. Rod Garner explores all of these aspects of her life, including the people who inspired her. As an extra, almost a bonus, each chapter includes reflections, quotations and prayers so that the book could be used for group study. Well recommended.
