The Iona Community was founded in Glasgow in 1938 by George MacLeod, minister, visionary and prophetic witness for peace, in the context of the poverty and despair of the Depression. Its original task of rebuilding the monastic ruins of Iona Abbey became a sign of hopeful rebuilding of community in Scotland and beyond. Since that time, the Community's Rule has been the common thread running through the life of its members, weaving them together. As the church becomes polarised in many places, many people are seeking a committed life which is radical, but also open, ecumenical and inclusive. The scripture and time themes were most helpful: nurturing a growing love of Gods word, and blocks of work, rest & play. I still linger with the daily planning routine before 8.00am that is woven into Iona’s pattern: this and other practical applications are meaningful treasures from this book. The further reading suggestions at the end of each chapter are most helpful, all contributing to the ecumenical, broad, challenging and inclusive nature of the Iona legacy. These reflections track all of the life of the Iona Community and are a beautifully executed resource guide to its life. Strong yet sensitive.
