Ann Goldingay had multiple sclerosis. And, over a period of forty-three years, that eventually left her not only wheelchair-bound but unable to swallow or speak. In this book, John Goldingay reflects on their married lifetogether and on her remarkable life, and on what it has been like to grieve for her after her death in 2009. His account is moving, wise, challenging. It is a must-read for carers, nurses, counsellors and couples.

John Goldingay is the author of the Old testament for Everyone series from SPCK. In this heart-warming story of life with his wife Ann who became a sufferer of multiple sclerosis for forty-three years before her death, he describes their life together particularly throughout this period and after her death in 2009. He writes as if he is talking to Ann, reminiscing about their meeting and early life together. About their marriage, despite Ann’s parent’s disapproval which increased when she became pregnant with Steven before her final exams. About progress in their respective careers – Ann was a psychiatrist until her health failed – John an ordained priest. They had a further child Mark and though Ann’s illness worsened through the years life was good. While John was principle at St John’s theological college in the UK, Ann was confined to a wheel chair and it is during this time that John writes what is for me a wonderful statement about his wife, ‘You had an extraordinary capacity to arouse love in them’ (the students) There must be many who remember that time. The story continues with their move to Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California where John became Professor of Old Testament, Ann’s worsening condition and ultimate death. A moving, but not a depressing read and although ‘enjoyable’ is not quite right I do highly recommend this book.
