Arising out of many years of giving workshops and retreats on the theme, Ian Adams explores simple spiritual practices that will enable us to live with imagination, adventure and generosity and to keep our balance in life, even when things threaten to overwhelm us.

'Running Over Rocks' offers a series of 25 down-to-earth spiritual strategies for everyday living that can help us not just to cope, but to see the difficulties that might otherwise derail us as fresh opportunities to let the God of the unexpected come in and transform us.

Ian Adams draws on the life-changing possibilities of the Parables of Jesus and the Beatitudes which upend our usual theories of success and well being. The wisdom and work of monastics and contemplatives, activists and artists, and all who are trying to reshape the world for good today are generously shared here.

I bought this book for a dear friend of mine who is a vicar, having found my own copy truly inspirational. The combination of the author’s own experiences and insights with spiritual practices I could follow, deepened my faith and opened new pathways.

What a wonderful book from the author of the Cave Refectory Road - and although not a companion volume it almost feels as though it is. Contained in this book is the same spirituality but turned into a practical guide, a devotional, a weekly exercise and contemplation that builds on the same ancient ways and practices we discovered in Cave Refectory Road. There are 52 studies in this book, each begins with a poem and then moves into a series of contemplations or studies that draw both from the very modern with a biblical reflection and older wisdom or insight too and rounded out with a varying Spiritual Practice at the end of each study. Some studies are practical and physical, some are mental and psychological, some are meditative and creative, all are deeply insightful and helpful. This is a lovely book and would make a great one year devotional, but it also makes for a great "retreat" tool or resource.
