It is a shame that no one told him that he was made in the image and likeness of God, whether he is gay or not, whether he is celebate or not. He didn't have to earn his image by denying part of himself. It might have saved him years of pain and guilt and thinking he was broken and disordered and less-than. He means well, but he trains the reader to talk down to LGBT+ people while thinking they're being charitable. I foresee this book doing grave harm, especially among those who wish to do good but don't know many queer persons well. It is sad that some Christians can go into prisions and meet murderes and thieves and see that persons humanity and see God's likeness and image in them and show them love - but can't do the same to an LGBT+ person, whether celibate or not, they still see and treat people as other, as less-than. This is bigotry not biblical. It felt like every other page, people who were not completely straight were just thrown under the bus or otherwise insulted. Love, your doing it wrong. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:36-40) Human sexuality is a beautiful gift from God, inherent in each of us. If one is in a loving, committed relationship, engaging in human sexuality is the ultimate expression of that loving relationship. The problem is that whenever some people hears/talks about LOVE between same-sex couples, all they can see, think of, talk about is the SEX part of the relationship, ONE facet in ANY loving, committed relationship. After hunger and thirst, sex is the strongest drive in humans. To deny one's sexual drive is physically and emotionally damaging. Some people have the 'gift of celibacy' or are called to be celibate - but forcing it on someone for life will cause damage. Taking away all hope of a having a significant other, a partner, a family is cruel. Condeming someone to a life of loneliness is unjust. What I'm trying to get across is the fact that it does NOT matter WHO we love; it does NOT matter HOW we love; the ONLY thing that matters is THAT we love. "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." (1 John 4:8) This book, while better than some, still teaches hatred and self-loathing and a such will cause harm to the LGBT+ community who are taught to loath themselves and cause harm to the Christian community who are taught to hate others. Love, you are doing it wrong.
