Significant climate change as a consequence of human pollution of the atmosphere looks increasingly likely.
Some change is already occurring but quite what magnitude of change will occur and what it will bring to different parts of the world remains unknown.
In the face of this uncertain yet impending crisis, does it make sense to speak of a moral response? Michael Northcott argues not only that it does, but that it is an essential weapon in winning the battle against further environmental disaster.

This very timely book is subtitled “The Ethics of Global Warming”. In it Michael Northcott examines not only the economics, technology and science of global warming, but also the moral and ethical dimensions. He insists that every one of us has a shared responsibility to face up to the biggest challenge of this century. It is a profoundly serious issue and we must acknowledge its seriousness before anything can be done. In this comprehensive survey the author ranges widely over all the issues, both economic and moral, pulling no punches when he deals with exploitation and multi-nationals, but he always brings us back to the personal. Northcott is a Christian and a theologian and makes reference throughout to the moral duty of all of us who live in God’s creation, this precious planet of ours. Extremely well researched and well-organised, this book demands a positive response from each one of us.

This book is not an easy read but it is an interesting one and certainly a book that is incredibly topical given all the concerns about the climactic changes we can look forward to. Michael Northcott uses a sound mix of science interspersed throughout with biblical commentary and consideration as to what the climate change can mean in light of the revelation of creation, but also addresses what ethical issues also arise from the climate issue. Definitely a book that could appeal to a variety of readers, and it would be great for an serious reading group.
