The Black Church in the 21st Century is an anthology which provides an exciting look at the key issues facing the Black Church Movement in Britain today, representing a bold attempt for scope and analysis. Now over 50 years old, and having experienced great success, the Black Church is facing an uncertain future as part of a context in which Christianity is itself challenged by an increasingly secular, plural society. This collection by various distinguished members of the Black Church, shows why at post-modern moment of competing voices and simultaneous calls for faith and cultural cohesion, the Black Church is crucial as a prophetic advocate for the Black Community. Its chapters also demonstrates that current and future social, economic and political challenges demand of the Black Church in Britain greater awareness and progressive change in both style and substance.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

The Black Church in the 21st Century is a volume of essays mostly from learned members of the black community who analyse and expound personal perspectives in their areas of experience. Subject matter is diverse covering subjects such as; The Holy Spirit, Politics, Climate Change, Health, Gospel Music, and Youth. In his essay on social issues the Reverend Les Isaacs (one of the initiators behind the now well publicised Street Pastors’ project) successfully tackles and offers solutions to recognisable issues of the black church communities. I particularly enjoyed the earlier part of Dionne Gravesande’s skilful writing on the elders and their influence on the younger generations. On Juliet Fletcher’s expounding on the British Gospel scene and following her comments on black hymn writers ‘yet to be published in the wider Christian world’ it should be noted that as a black hymn and songwriter I have been published in hymn and songbook collections by established publishers since 1993. The anthology does provide some fresh insights and generally speaking is a welcome reference book on the subject.
