In the months before Isaac's birth, his father was in prison once again. His mother was forced into having an abortion, though seven months pregnant, because she was carrying the child of an enemy of the state. After desperate prayer, the night before she was due to go into hospital for the operation, she miraculously gave birth.

Isaac met his father for the first time at the age of four. Brother Yun was constantly on the run, and his mother had to work to feed the family, so his grandmother cared for him. One day his mother was also arrested. Isaac and his sister were swiftly taken to another town by local Christians, where they registered at a school under false names. The family finally managed to flee to Burma, Thailand and ultimately Germany.

As he grew up, what should Isaac do? Isaac's mother had prayed that God would not call her son to be an evangelist - but his father had dedicated him to God. Isaac, now in his twenties, has embraced the call to be a pastor.

Isaac Liu, son of Chinese evangelist Brother Yun of bestselling biography The Heavenly Man, recounts growing up in Communist China with a father who was an enemy of the state. Isaac being born at all was in itself a miracle as his mother was ordered to abort him during a term of his father’s imprisonment. The reason given that the unborn child was of an ‘illegal’ preacher. With no other help his mother reverted to desperate prayer. The result was Isaac’s arrival months ahead of time. His birth protected him from the law - he could no longer be killed. Isaac’s story weaves in the lives of his family largely against a background of simple village living and the shadow cast by the authorities. Nai Nai, Isaacs grandmother warmed my heart the most though as a comforting example of God’s love for us in spite of the weakness of our humanity. Nai Nai denied her faith under persecution and couldn’t find her way back but Jesus found her. Time and time again I found myself pausing to consider her and the way she was sustained through her faith.
