Rick Warren, R. C. Sproul, Al Mohler, Thabiti Anyabwile, Francis Chan and John Piper challenge us to pursue holistic Christianity. They want us to be thinkers, very engaged and serious thinkers, and more. To be feelers, with a great passion for Jesus and his gospel, and more. And doers, endeavouring to do great acts of love for others, and more.

Our Saviour perfectly embodies all three, and demonstrates that thinking, loving and doing are indeed not at odds, but mutually strengthening and reinforcing.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

A difficult book to review in the space available, mainly because of the well-balanced diversity of its contributors – each individual section deserves its own appreciation! The authors encourage us to use the minds God gave us to think – about Him, about our neighbours, about ourselves and about His purposes for all of us, but also exhibit an awareness that, while combating anti-intellectualism, they might be encouraging the opposite evil by enthroning knowledge above all else. So David Mathis begins by talking of holistic Christianity and omni- versus mono-perspectivism and the difficulties of having both unity and purity in our churches. Rick Warren explores the Spiritual warfare arena that is the mind, then RC Sproul considers secular – specifically Greek – philosophy and the Bible’s answer to it. Thabiti Anybwile, a converted Muslim, gives an accurate explanation of Islam and warns against fear, misinformation and stereotyping, then Francis Chan talks of intellectual pride and the fact that how much our lives and attitudes resemble those of Jesus matters more than how much we know about Him. John Piper ends with a reminder of Rick Warren’s warnings about the unreliability of our hearts and thoughts, and the truth that loving God is the key to everything. An insightful and excellently written volume, thoroughly recommended.
