MacDonald was read and admired by many well-known theologians, including G.K. Chesterton, Oswald Chambers, and C.S. Lewis, who pointed to MacDonald as an inspirer and guide for their own faith and writings. Lewis said of MacDonald, "I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself."
