No figure in history has received more attention, and been less understood, than Jesus of Nazareth. Much of what has been written recently portrays Jesus as a vaguely kind and friendly person whose message sometimes pleases but never challenges believers. People might even be tempted to ask "Why all the fuss? What here is worth devoting my life to?" Very little about that Jesus is worth it, says Will Willimon. Yet there is another Jesus, the mysterious preacher from Nazareth who continues to invite men and women to claim the true meaning of their lives by giving their lives away in service to God and others. This Jesus continues to fascinate and compel us, in spite of all the attempts to domesticate his message and put distance between us and the call to follow. In his radical teachings, his self-sacrificial death, and his liberating life beyond death, this Jesus teaches and shows us the true meaning and purpose of our own lives.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Despite the familiar title and thoughts of “Not another …?” this is not a more of the same, re-ploughing an already very deep furrow. With chapter titles such as: Vagabond; Peacemaker; Party Person; Magician; Home Wrecker; Lover and Delegator they are bound to intrigue and encourage closer scrutiny; it is not what one might expect from a Methodist Bishop! Willimon is a skilful communicator and uses a clever combination of humour, and word-play with a deep knowledge and understanding to reflect on aspects of Jesus that are often overlooked or brushed over. The book is very accessible at all levels; entertaining; a page-turner and yet very informative leaving the reader meditating on what has been read long after many other books have been forgotten about. Some statements may initially shock but Willimon guides the reader to a new facet of Jesus, a crafted nugget of truth which again demonstrates the author’s skill. Some of the colloquial American English may challenge UK readers, but this also raises an opportunity for further meditation to re-translate the gist back into a similar, more familiar idiom. I would recommend this to anyone; the cover is very understated and easily overlooked on the bookshop shelves. Get a copy to read, enjoy it and return to tell your bookshop about it so that they are aware of how good it is. While you are there get other copies to give away as gifts – they will be much appreciated by most recipients.
