Ruth Valerio helps you relate themes in the Bible to wider world issues

Saying Yes to Life lifts our focus from every day (and perfectly natural) concerns to issues that are impacting millions of lives around the world. As people made in the image of God, we are entrusted to look after what God has made – to share in the joy and creativity of God in making a difference for good. Ruth Valerio imaginatively draws on the Days of Creation (Genesis 1 - 2.2) in relating themes of light, water, land, the seasons, other creatures, humankind, Sabbath rest and resurrection hope to matters of environmental, ethical and social concern.

Foundational to the book are what it means to be human and, in particular, to be a follower of Jesus during Lent. Voices from other continents are heard throughout, and each chapter ends with discussion questions, a prayer, and specially commissioned art to aid action and contemplation.

A book of fresh air for me, approaching the first chapter of Genesis with an appreciation of when and why it was written in comparison with other creation stories of the time. But also with much relevance for learning its lessons for our contemporary world. I warmly commend this book.

Ruth Valerie is a lady of wide interests and knowledge, which she now shares with the reader. Every chapter is different, we are taken on an exploration of some aspect of God’s creation, using latest discoveries to open up the subject. It is not a gentle afternoon read, but well worth waking up for.

I’m probably a bit slow on the uptake but this book has helped me to make changes that are long overdue to many aspects of life. What I use and how I use it, who provides it and what follow up actions are required. The Lord is calling many of us to a new way of life and Ruth is a great encouragement in every sense of the word.

I bought this book as the Archbishop's Lent book and so have not yet completed reading it. So far I have found it very easy to read and very interesting. I am enjoying thinking through Ruth Valerio's interpretation and bringing together of Scripture on each of the topics, and find the worldwide information about the present situation concerning these of great interest and challenging. This is a book to be read by all as we seek to address the global issues of climate change and protect God's creation.

Is this book suitable for an adult Bible Study group to use through Lent? How many sessions/chapters are there? Is it a study guide, or more just a book to read individually?
