'Another Story Must Begin' is an original Lent course based on the film, the novel and the stage adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. Through discussion of some of the themes and principal characters of this epic narrative, the course explores the grace of God and our own fallen state and opportunity for redemption, and helps us to reassess what we can do with our lives and for those around us.

The course is based around five weekly group sessions:

  • Fantine and Cosette
  • The Bishop of Digne
  • Jean Valjean
  • Javert
  • Redemption and Salvation

Each session includes watching scenes from the Oscar-winning movie starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway (with timing references for the DVD), and questions and reflections for group discussion. Each session also includes introductory reading, notes for leaders, related Bible passages and suggested closing prayers.

Jonathan Meyer is priest-in-charge of St. Mary the Virgin in Ewelme, which was used as the residence of the Bishop of Digne in the pivotal moment in the Les Miserables movie. He has since run a successful Lent course in his parish, on which this book is based.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

A great little lent course that utilises the current passion for Les Miserables. Each week is focused on looking at an individual character(s) and from them pulling and teasing out the idea’s that are incorporated into them. It concludes with week five, where we look at the issue of Redemption and Salvation as played out in the book and film. What is good about this course is that it is designed to work with both the film, stage production and book, so there are suggestions for the film clip to be watched or alternatively for one of the songs from the stage production to be listened to or the lyrics read. Each week there is a comprehensive overview in advance of the actual studies, and each study is very well designed with a good pull in of actual biblical references and reflection too. A very good study that I would think would be very popular indeed.

Could this course be successfully run on Zoom meetings including showing video clips?

You might have to check the copyright for showing clips of the movie over zoom. We would recommend the participants each having a copy of the book.
