Ian Mobsby is an Anglican priest with an interest in what the book calls 'small missional communities' including the Moot Community in London. He is also an Associate Missioner with the Archbishop of Canterbury's Fresh Expression team and a national selector for the Church of England's Ordained Pioneer Ministry. That gives a flavour of where his interests lie. It is from that background and with those concerns that he considers the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. (The book was first published in 2008 and is now re-issued.) The first chapters of the book examine the idea of knowing God and the concept of the Trinity as found in scripture and the writings of the early Church fathers (and mothers). He then jumps many centuries and notes the contribution of Karl Barth. Most of this will be well known to anyone with a basic knowledge of Christian theology, though one wonders why nothing seems worth mentioning between Augustine and Barth. His summary of this survey is, however, quite startling: the western church, unlike the eastern Orthodox, has lacked a proper understanding of the Holy Spirit – until the emergence of the charismatic movement. The heart of the book is an exploration of how we encounter God as Trinity now. (An Orthodox icon is reproduced in the book and used as a source of reflection.) Here the style is unashamedly popular, with many references to films and books which I must confess have passed me by. The final part examines how we might build community using the insights of these explorations into the nature of the Trinity. I was left unconvinced. You do not have to believe in God as Trinity to be in favour of community. But if you think Fresh Expressions is the future of the Church your instincts will be confirmed on every page.
