Reveals the impact of key ministers on modern faith

You will gain insight into the roots of evangelicalism

Explore the inspiring stories of five key ministers who transformed the Church of England.
These are the stories of five key ministers of the 18th and 19th centuries who changed the whole spirit of the Church of England - and whose influence is still seen today. Each one of these men was associated with Cambridge University. William Grimshaw (1708-1763) Christ's College, was a friend of John Wesley who was one of the first leaders of the 18th century revival. He frequently had 1200 worshippers at his church in Haworth (most outside the building!). Even the modern day Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, felt his influence. John Berridge (1716-1793) Clare College was influenced by Grimshaw and became known as the 'Pedlar of the Gospel' after refusing to obey his Bishop who said he should NOT be preaching to the people in the fields. Henry Venn (1725-1797) Queen's College was also a leader in the Evangelical Revival and the 'spiritual father' of the Clapham Sect of Social reformers, which included William Wilberforce's campaign against slavery. He was also the mentor to Charles Simeon* (1759-1836) Kings College, a founder of the Church Missionary Society and a key consultant for the East India Company on their choice of chaplains, one of whom was his curate, Henry Martyn (1781-1812) St Johns College. Martyn, a brilliant linguist, became a missionary in India and Persia (now Iran) and in 5 years translated the Bible into Urdu and Persian. He also wrote three tracts for Muslim's that are still used today as examples of the best way to interact with Muslims. He died aged only 31 and is remembered by the formation of the Henry Martyn Centre for study of mission and World Christianity.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a re-issue of a book first published in 1952. Two of the four biographies it contains will be of particular value – those of William Grimshaw of Haworth, where ‘he could ride for a full half-day, east, west, north, south, and not meet a godly soul, nor even hear tell of one’! And John Berridge whose epitaph had: ‘I was born in sin February 1716 Remained ignorant of my fallen state till 1730 Lived proudly on Faith and Works for Salvation till 1754 Admitted to Everton Vicarage 1755 Fled to Jesus alone for refuge 1756’ (and added later; Fell asleep in Christ January 22nd 1793)!
