If the church is going to use the Bible to decide whether divorce is legitimate in certain cases and whether divorced couples have the right to remarry with the approval and blessing of God's people, then the Bible must be studied without prejudice toward a particular answer.;The author examines the relevant passages in both the Old and New Testaments so that his readers can consider the many issues and interpretations that arise in trying to establish a consistently biblical position. As a result, readers can see more clearly and accept more firmly the truth of Scripture.;The book succeeds at being exactly what the author wanted it to be: "a comprehensive, lucid, accurate study presented in a readable and practical style..." It is a valuable resource for the pastor, counselor, church leader, and others who are struggling to understand and apply scriptural principles to the problems of divorce and remarriage.

Jay E Adams focusses on the nature of the 'sin' in divorce and of 'dynamic reconciliation'. as almostly always being the answer. He offers a biblical exegesis on 'divorce', tracking through reference and at times the Greek. The preface and intro weren't too bad. However, I felt as he explored marriage, engagement, separation, divorce and re-marriage, that he couldn't see the wood for the proverbial trees (of sin - especially fornication and adultery) and most relationships, whether they turn out to be successful ot not are, in my opinion, usually pretty complex. He sort of addresses a Christian couple's issues in an example on page 89 and 90, where he places a heavy duty on the Church and then 'cops out'. Here is an extract - "Joe should be called upon to repent ( he left because of incompatability in his marriage) and seek reconciliation with Mary and his former church. If all goes well M and J will be reconciled... But let us suppose Joe sinfully refuses to be reconciled, in this case M (his wife) should oursue Matt 18 v15ff If Joe's church does what it should Joe will repent or be excommunicated, setting the matter to rest..." page 90 notes 3-9. Poor old Joe, methinks. I note that the book was written in the 1980s and I don't know much about J E Adams and wonder whether he stills holds onto such a rigid position. I'm going to hunt for a couple of more recent books to explore the subject a bit further.
