New marriage legislation came into effect on 1 October 2008. I thought this book might be a bit beyond me – serious stuff after all. I found that Stephen Lake’s style of writing makes for easy reading, yet all the help and advice, up to date facts and rules and regulations are here in an easy to access format. He discusses where we are now, why the new measures have been brought in and the opportunities for mission that the new regulations offer to any parish willing to ‘grasp the nettle’. I liked the personal stories and experiences throughout the text, was encouraged by the chapter Marriage: Research and Reality so ably written by Lynda Barley within the main body of the book, not tagged on the end, and the frequent and relevant quotations from the Bible. This is essential reading for the professional marriage minister, for as the author says, that is what any ordained person is; and the PCCs who need to give their support to any changes of approach adopted by their parish.
