Ana Lisa de Jong's poetry collection 'Songs in the Night', which spans an ordinary year in the life of the author, is sure to strike a chord in many hearts as she explores the timeless yet transient themes of love, loss, joy and sorrow, with touching vulnerability and honesty, along with vivid imagery; against the backdrop of an ever emergent faith and hope, in a loving, eternal Heavenly Father.

Author Ana Lisa's love of nature is evident in the beautiful photos of natural New Zealand accompanying her poetry, which along with the bible verses in the book, allows the book to be used similar to a devotional by the reader.

Ana Lisa subscribes to the saying, "I don't know what I think until I write it down", and she tends to write through all her circumstances, to make sense of the world, and derive meaning from her experiences. She believes that her ability to delve deep and find meaning in the seasons of life, 'the treasures hidden in the darkness', and communicate that meaning through words, will provide her readers with spiritual insights, comfort and encouragement.

Songs in the Night is divided into three parts.'Songs in the Night', 'Ode to the Dawn', and 'Joy in the Morning'.Ana Lisa's book echoes the circle of the 'day' which contains both light and the dark. She takes comfort in the cycles of nature, the circular patterns of the day and night, the seasons; and the life cycle of humanity, and she perceives our pain, "the getting and the losing" as being no less important and relevant than our happiness. She believescontentment is possible through all the seasons, and shades of night and day, because of the goodness of God underpinning it all.

I am enjoying Songs in the Night immensely. I find that it is a book I return to again and again as it continues to provide me with fresh words of encouragement and inspiration. Ana Lisa's depth of insight and her ability to relate human emotions in her poetry that are common to all of us, while consistently weaving through messages of hope and joy, drawn from a strong, deep faith, makes her writing both incredibly personal, and widely general in its humanity, applicable to people from all walks of life whatever their experience. Speaking with others who have read her book, it is certainly having a profound affect on people. Much recommended.
