I have followed this book for both Advent and Lent courses, beginning as it does with the Annunciation and ending at the foot of the Cross. It has inspired wide-ranging and interesting discussion in my groups. Personally, it made me think about Jesus's relationship with his family, as a real human being, as I've never done before; obedient to his mother, even as a grown man. I felt I'd seen him in a new light, which has made the course truly rewarding. The questions are aimed at all-comers: newcomers to the faith as well as people of long-standing faith, so some of the questions seem too simple, and some seem repetitive, and you need to pick and choose according to the group. There are helpful guidelines and explanations for the leader at the back of the book. At the front of the book are helpful introductions to Mary as a person, to The Message bible, and to the concept of colouring-in being helpful for focussing thoughts. In my groups, it is only the women who have been interested in and involved in the colouring-in, many of them enthusiastically, whether because it helps thought or is simply an enjoyable process, I don't know. My present group feels strongly that the prayer on p.31 is inappropriate and should be changed - it sounds as if we are blackmailing God, and will give him the glory if he spares us embarrassment and pain in life; but life is about facing, tackling and overcoming problems, with God at our side.
