From the self confessed ‘Mr Bean of the Christian faith’ - and one half of the most entertaining double-act on the Christian live stage circuit, Jeff Lucas lets you in how to get over 10 common barriers to prayer; not simply with words, but through finding the heart and mind you need to discover the reality of a life of prayer.

With Jeff Lucas’ typical wit and word play, the title ‘Standing on My Knees’ lets you know you’re in for something wise but not weighty, deep but not desparate and even funny but not frivolous. Just as honest in print as he is on stage with fellow writer and raconteur, Adrian Plass, Jeff illustrates his message – that you can grow a one-to-one relationship with God - using his own experience of the trials, torments and even trivialities of trying to live by faith.

Updated and upgraded from his 2003 title ‘How Not to Pray’, this reissue isn’t meant as a book of ready to use utterances written by someone else, nor is it a recipe book for standard, copybook prayers. Rather it’s the beginning of a journey into a lifelong, fulfilling life of prayer.

‘Standing On My Knees’ Is:
• A revised and reissued edition of Jeff’s 2003 book ‘How Not To Pray’.
• An encouragement who feel inadequate in prayer or find praying difficult.
• A guide to growing a lifelong, fulfilling life of prayer in relationship with God.

Jeff doesn’t set out to humiliate those of us who find it hard to pray, or to give simplistic words that give us a false sense of having prayed. Instead, he highlights how God is already listening and already in relationship with us, and then helps us get our prayer habits into place so we can be more aware of his presence.

Describing himself as “passionately committed to fun before death,’ author, broadcaster and church leader, Jeff Lucas, has renewed and revived the spirits of UK Christians through an alliance with fellow wit and wise man, Adrian Plass. Teaching pastor at Timberline Church, Colorado, Jeff is best known in the UK for his broadcasts on Premier and UCB radio and CWR Bible daily reading notes. His 'Life Journeys' books and DVDs continually prove popular with experienced and new Christians as the basis for their personal devotions and as the core teaching resources for small study groups.

Previously involved with Spring Harvest, former Vice President of the Evangelical Alliance and an ambassador for Compassion UK, Jeff Lucas has authored more than 20 bestselling books with sales of more than 1 million copies. Travelling between the US and UK, Jeff is the stand-up, or rather sit down, partner with fellow Christian author and humorist, Adrian Plass. Their ‘Seriously Funny’ tour, now in its second edition – predictably called ‘Seriously Funny 2’, plays to sell out houses up and down the UK. And the tour’s accompanying book, consistently titled ‘Seriously Funny 2’ too, is on its way to best seller status.

With his books in the ‘Helen Sloane’ series, Jeff Lucas adds novelist to his writing credits. Now in three volumes: ‘Helen Sloane’s Diary’, ‘Up Close and Personal: What Helen did Next’ and ‘Heaven Help Helen Sloane’, the books recount the adventures and misadventures of a single girl struggling with church life and the search for love of the romantic kind.

More typical of Jeff’s writing output, ‘I Was Just Wandering’ gives you straightforward talk about healing and suffering. While ‘There Are No Strong People’ is a provocative, breathtakingly honest look at the Bible’s infamous rascal, Samson, exploring some vital principles for living life well. Whatever your preference, in books by Jeff Lucas you’ll find easy to read writing in a sensitive style that’s honest, informative and encouraging. Often using humour but never humiliating, Jeff always leaves you feeling better for having read one of his books, than if you’d tried to struggle on alone. – Les Ellison

Jeff Lucas turns his hallmark wit and candour on ten myths that hinder our prayer life. Describing his book as an 'alternative prayer manual', Jeff offers a wealth of practical suggestions to help Christians of all ages and stages to develop a stronger one-on-one relationship with the Almighty. He is open about his own struggles in this area, and writes with clarity and compassion about an aspect of the life of faith that many of us find difficult.

First published in 2003, this book is now thoroughly revised and updated. Jeff says: 'The core message is the same, but ten years on I am writing from a different part of the wood. I am not sure I am wiser, but I am certainly more experienced - and continue to believe that if we get our prayer habits right, the rest of life is more likely to fall into place.'

Jeff Lucas holds a teaching post at Timberline Church, Fort Collins, Colorado. He is author of more than 20 books, and a highly popular speaker. He writes a monthly column for Christianity magazine and regular Bible notes for CWR and appears on stage with Adrian Plass in their 'Seriously Funny' series of tours, sharing correspondence with him in the books of the same title.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Jeff Lucas's writing always makes me smile. This engaging book on prayer is no exception. He insists he is not an 'expert' in prayer and has some self-deprecating stories to prove it. But as he walks us through the Lord's Prayer, phrase by phrase, the practical suggestions he offers obviously flow out of his life-long experience. Be aware that this book is a re-publication of How not to pray first published ten years ago. There is a new introduction but the rest of the book is the same with some minor editorial changes. I did read the original book ten years ago but I am glad to have read it again now.
