Jesus is coming back On this issue Evangelicals are united.
But ask, "When will he return? Before or after the millennium? What will the millennium be like? What exactly is our hope?" and you enter a bewildering maze of options all claiming to be the right one.
In this book Stanley J. Grenz provides historical and biblical, as well as theological, perspective on the four major positions held by evangelicals--postmillennialism, dispensational premillennialism, historic premillennialism and amillennialism. Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each position, he seeks to cut a new path through the maze that reaffirms the valid insights of each and sounds a fresh note of hope in an age of shattered illusions.
As an added bonus readers will find that Grenz takes note of some of the latest development in dialog between dispensationalists and covenant theologians. The result has been some modifications in long-held positions that have brought the two groups closer together.

This is an excellent book. I did find Chapter 1 quite difficult to follow, but I was so glad that I persevered because it becomes much clearer after this. It presents all the different positions on the millennium and the rapture, and what biblical evidence, if any, there is for these. He also explains the background as to when and why these first arose. For instance, it becomes clear that the idea of the church being raptured first came from Jon Nelson Darby in the mid 1850's and was then popularised by the Schofield Reference Bible. I t also becomes clear that many of the original positions were later revised and are still being revised in the light of subsequent debates and discussions. You are left to make up your own mind about the final position, but you feel way more equipped to do this after reading this book than before you started. An excellent book on this topis which I would recommend to anyone with questions about this topic. (My thanks also to Dr Phil Kramer (Hot Springs, AR) for recommending this book).
