When Robin Oake’s son, Special Branch officer Stephen, was killed by a terrorist while on duty, a press conference was called. A journalist asked, ‘Mr Oake, what do you think about the man who killed your son?’ and received a startling reply: ‘I don’t know the man or the circumstances but from my heart I forgive him.’ Another journalist said, ‘What?’ and our response may well be the same. But in this powerful and moving book, Robin shares his story and the reasons for his amazing forgiveness. Using examples from his long experience in the police he explores the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of forgiveness – even in extreme circumstances.

Robin Oake was Chief Constable of the Isle of Man when he retired. During his career he was Chief Inspector to the Metropolitan Police and Superintendant to the Assistant Chief Constable in the Greater Manchester Police. He holds the Queen's Police Medal. His book is a response to his experience and an inspiration to all facing difficulties in finding the will to forgive.

Robin Oake’s message is that we must ‘Ask God to help us forget like he deliberately forgets our sin.’ He learnt this lesson himself, the hard way. As a serving Assistant Chief Constable, he was very proud to have in his force, his son Steve. They are a happy close-knit family with daughters and grandchildren and Steve was a much loved member but was murdered in the course of his duties. What a shock for his wife, children and the rest of the family. How to come to terms with a trauma like this? Robin Oake tells the story of the time surrounding this tragedy and then explores the wider issue of forgiveness in our lives. It is easy to say the words, but to feel genuine forgiveness and harbour no resentment? That can be excruciatingly difficult and potentially damaging to the one trying and not succeeding to forgive. At times like these we need the strength of our Lord and Saviour to enable us to forgive fully. A very necessary lesson for us all, and a book well worth reading.
