The last book published before Nouwen's death in 1996, Can You Drink the Cup? has been translated into ten languages and sold more than 135,000 copies. Exploring the deep spiritual impact of the question Jesus asked his friends James and John, Nouwen reflects upon the metaphor of the cup, using the images of holding, lifting, and drinking to articulate the basics of the spiritual life. Written with the profound insight and clarity characteristic of his numerous best-selling books, Nouwen's deeply perceptive exploration of Jesus' challenging question has the power to pierce your heart, expand your spiritual horizons, and radically change your life.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is Henri Nouwen's last book, published just before his death in 1996, and a year before he celebrated his fortieth anniversary as a Priest. His uncle, also a Priest, had given Nouwen his own traditional gold chalice; latterly, in the L’Arche Daybreak Community, he used large hand-crafted glass cups for the Blood of Christ. Reflecting on Jesus' question to James and John, he sees the actions of holding, lifting and then drinking the Cup, as ways to explain what underpins a spiritual life. In holding the Cup, we look at who we are; in lifting it, we celebrate life, ourselves, with others in community; and in drinking it, we accept ourselves, trusting in God. Hence, 'Spiritual greatness...has everything to do with being as great as each of us can be. ... True sanctity is...drinking our own cup and trusting that...we can become a source of hope for many' (p. 89). He concludes that Jesus' question has an ever-changing meaning. The apostles' '...first easy yes had to be followed by many hard yeses until their cups were completely empty' (p. 116). These meditations, informed by his and other people’s experiences, make this a recognised 'classic'. The question is an invitation from Our Lord, one which we wish to accept. In this book, we are given the confidence to say 'yes', whatever the problems and difficulties we may ourselves encounter.
