In Falling Upward (and in many of his other teachings), Richard Rohr talks at length about ego (or the False Self) and how it gets in the way of spiritual maturity, especially if its preoccupations continue into the second half of life. But if there's a False Self, is there also a True Self? What is it? How is it found? Why does it matter? And what does it have to do with the spiritual journey? In his new book, the author likens True Self to a diamond, buried deep within us, formed under the intense pressure of our lives and needing to be searched for, uncovered, and separated from all the debris of ego that surrounds it. In a sense True Self must, like Jesus, be resurrected, and that process involves not resuscitation but transformation.

For those unfamiliar with RichardRohr this would be a good introduction to his Fransiscan theology, it can open your eyes to see the gospels with fresh vision. It can be the beginning of a journey to discover more about yourself, Christ, the Trinity and creation.

This is the best book I have read for thinking about the great questions: What is life? What is death? What is the soul? And so on. Father Richard Rohr is a Catholic priest who is orthodox, but unafraid to question aspects of the Christian religion, for example the atonement theory. He firmly believes all religions seek the ONE truth. 'We have been far too eager to create enemies instead of realizing that others often enjoyed very similar 'good news' but inside different packaging.' The book's title is taken from a lesser known poem of Gerard Manley Hopkins, and the diamond is a metaphor for the soul. Though easy to read, the book is not an 'easy read' for it provokes thought and requires an open mind and a willingness to change. I highly recommend it.

Richard Rohr's new book has a profound depth that digs at the heart of who and what we are. He makes us work at mining our deepest beliefs and self delusions until what is left is the heart of our true self, our innermost being stripped bare of its self defences, our altered perceptions and the voices of others, until we find buried beneath all that the heart of ourselves as God sees us, unearthed at last the "Immortal Diamond". Like Rohr's previous works this focuses on spiritual and psychological growth and insight, but in this book the Biblical consideration and narrative of death and resurrection is deep and rich. Indeed so much so that it would make an incredible companion on the journey to resurrection that is Lent and Holy Week - though to be fair it would have impact at any time. At the end of the book are appendixes with a series of practical exercises to help you build on your understanding of the book. It's a fantastic book and one not just for fans of Rohr's previous work, indeed if you've never come across his work before this would be a wonderful place to start.
