We now take it for granted that aspects of the monastic life can sustain our daily lives in the world, but we owe this understanding to John Main, whose vision of a 'monastery without walls' has grown into a worldwide network of people who today practice Christian meditation. This is his classic book on how to practice contemplative prayer, or Christian meditation. Stepping aside from the busyness of our daily lives and being still in the presence of God is the key to discovering our true selves and knowing God as 'the ground of our being'.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This small book is subtitled a manual for Christian meditation, which to some may seem a little mechanic, but this book is not about mastering a set of techniques but to teach us how to be at peace with ourselves in order that we might let the presence of Christ into our lives. To those who read this book there may not be any brand new insights, you, like me, may have tried countless times to get into a contemplative mode, and perhaps, failed most times. John Main has been there too and gives wise counsel as well as useful hints and practices on how to meditate effectively. In the later section where he provides twelve steps for mediators, the material gives us a way to prepare to practise and to share in prayer, in bringing Christ into our lives and minds for a brief part of our hectic lives. A useful read and very influential in the way he addresses our needs.
