The Day Is Yours is a protest against the culture of speed both in society at large but also, more ominously, in the church itself. Rooted in the monastic liturgy of the hours, The Day is Yours argues that in order for Christians to act as a truly prophetic witness, in a time of cultural decadence, they must recover a more biblical rhythm in which work, rest, relationships, worship and prayer are held together in creative tension. Written by a pastor, the central thrust of The Day Is Yours is that living one day at a time with gratitude and contentedness is vital, lest the church capitulates tothe distractedness of modern life.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a soothing book. It is a protest against the culture of speed not only in today's society at large, but also the church itself. The author is a pastor with leanings towards monasticism. Vespers, he suggests, are the 'mood of the soul'. Time, he says, should not be a controlling tyrant. He explores the importance for Christians of keeping the Sabbath private – and, quoting from Dorothy Bass, he says that if we are wired into a workplace that never shuts down, we are in danger of slipping into a world that is always winter and never Christmas. But as a sometimes uneasy sleeper, the chapter that I was really grateful for was the author's hints for a good forty winks. I will advise this to any restless Christian and will regard my copy jealously. It is a shame that there are so few books out there that suggest cures for modern insomniacs.
