Cardinal Henry Edward Manning (1808-92) was a major figure of the nineteenth- century Church. This book follows his intellectual formation and development from his early years and Anglican ministry, through his conversion to Catholicism to his subsequent role at the First Vatican Council.     Henry Edward Manning will forever it seems, be burdened with the label ‘Eminent Victorian’, and he also appears to be over-shadowed at the present time by J.H.Newman. This reissue of James Pereiro’s Cardinal Manning: An Intellectual Biography, first published 1998, is therefore very welcome as it seeks to dispel Lytton Strachey’s caricature, and restore Manning’s undoubted intellectual achievements during that age of quite remarkable theological flowering and endeavour. Pereiro’s first title is much to be preferred to his second. His book takes us to the first Vatican Council and Manning’s contribution, but the story does not end there. Manning’s social teaching and social action deserve careful treatment to give a fuller picture of this many faceted man.
