Dr. Trueman examines the origins of contemporary Reformed theology in the Reformation world of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. After tracing how this heritage shaped and transformed the intervening period, he then describes some of the major challenges being faced by the evangelical church at the present time and suggests ways of responding which remain faithful to the Scriptures and the theology of the Reformers drawn from it and points towards a future that embraces and disseminates these wonderful doctrines of grace.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a reprint of a book first published in 2000. It contains the substance of four addresses given at a conference held at the Evangelical Theological College of Wales. Professor Trueman’s aim is to show that the key teachings of the Reformation are as relevant and applicable today as they were in the 16th century. To do this the author concentrates on three areas: the cross of Christ, the word of God and assurance of salvation. In general the author succeeds in his aim. The book, in particular, is a call back to Christ-centred preaching that focuses on what God has done in history. Professor Trueman has some thoughtful insights as to what modern day preaching should look like and the pitfalls to avoid. He addresses some other weaknesses in today’s evangelical churches and highlights what needs to change. The book is packed with wise insights as to what was at the core of the Reformation and what should be at the core of a reforming church today. Written in an engaging, conversational style, the book is an interesting and thought provoking read.
