The Didache is one of the earliest Christian writings, reflecting the situation before 70 CE and before the four gospels became prevalent. O'Loughlin covers the history of the text from its discovery in the 19th-century and provides a new translation along with a commentary, which highlights areas of key interest to Christians today.

    The Good Book Stall

The Didache is one of the earliest Christian writings, almost certainly earlier than any of the New Testament texts. Its text was lost for centuries and rediscovered in the late nineteenth century, since when it has provided an insight into some of the thinking and practice of the early Church. The Greek word ‘didache’ means ‘teaching’ and, as such, the text of The Didache provides a guide for Christian living in sixteen distinct parts. O’Loughlin has provided an important and thorough introduction that opens a window on the manner in which early Christians conducted themselves. In effect it is a commentary on the text which itself is provided in a modern translation at the end of the book. Also included is a list for further reading, an index of biblical and ancient texts and, usefully, a comprehensive index to the book. Although at times somewhat heavy going (at least for this reviewer) the book provides a very helpful and useful introduction to the text, and will be of great value to anyone seeking a fuller understanding of life in those far off early churches.
