Some evangelicals perceive monasticism as a relic from the past or a retreat from the world, or they reject it as an aberration in Protestant circles. At the same time, contemporary evangelical spirituality desires historical Christian manifestations of the faith.

In this accessibly written book, an expert in monastic studies offers a historical survey of monasticism from its origins to current manifestations. Greg Peters recovers the riches of the monastic tradition for contemporary spiritual formation and devotional practice, explaining why the monastic impulse is a valid and necessary manifestation of the Christian faith for today's church.

Professors and students in Christian history and Christian spirituality classes will value this work, as will readers interested in evangelical spiritual formation.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a fantastic detailed look at the Monastic tradition from a protestant perspective and theologian, and it is really insightful and indeed quite unusual for this reason. It covers monasticism as a whole but what you do not often get in other books on the subject is that he looks at Luther, Calvin and reformation positions on monasticism beyond their seeming want to destroy them, this book goes so much deeper than that and highlights instead how and why the reformers took exceptions to the monastic traditions vows especially, but he then goes forwards to how within protestantism a new development of Monasticism arose and is still arising, and herein lies key fresh insights of a movement that is ongoing and needed still. A wonderful addition to the books on Monasticism and its history.
