It has been many years since there has been a popular level book, which has looked at the life and ministry of some of the fathers of the Free Church of Scotland.

This book looks at the life and ministry of a number of the key figures in the Disruption era and late 19th Century Free Church. Beginning with Thomas Chalmers, each chapter has a biographical sketch of a key figure with an emphasis on why these men mattered in their time and what they still have to say to us in the 21st century.

All of the men portrayed were committed to the advancement of the Gospel in Scotland and further afield. While they shared a commitment to the Confession of Faith and reformed theology, this was expressed in unique ways by each of these men. Hence both unity and diversity is on view in these fascinating pages.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

On 18th May 1843 many of the ablest and most eminent leaders of the Church of Scotland walked out of its General Assembly and formed the Free Church of Scotland. At the first Free Church General Assembly 470 ministers signed the deed declaring their separation from the Scottish ecclesiastical establishment. Joining them were 192 probationer ministers. About 40% of the lay membership also withdrew. “The Disruption” reshaped Scottish church life. What caused it? Should the State have jurisdiction over the appointment of ministers to parishes and what was the meaning of ‘establishment’. Finlayson deals masterfully with the issue and adds biographies of some significant characters in the Disruption and its aftermath, including Thomas Chalmers, Robert Candlish, James Begg, Alexander Duff and John Kennedy. These and others were men of principle with high regard for the church of Christ and for Scripture. Finlayson sets out the issues and consequences of this era of Scottish church history. Highly recommended.
