The North-East of England is rich in history, beautiful scenery and welcoming people. Celebrated for its Christian heritage, its saints are as diverse as the varied scenery in which we discover their history. This book is for pilgrims - both physical and metaphorical - who want the wisdom of the past to shape their present. In each chapter we discover the stories of the saints, both well known and unfamiliar, as we journey to the places they made famous. Some of the sites and saints included in the book are: Holy Island - Aidan, Cuthbert and Eadfrith; Hexham and Heavenfield - Oswald and Wilfrid; Jarrow& Monkwearmouth - Bede, Benedict Biscop and Ceolfrith; and, Durham Cathedral - Cuthbert's community.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This book is a sort of hybrid combination of travel guide, history book and a seven day moving retreat through the north east of England. Beginning at Holy Island you travel in the course of a week down to Whitby in the company of the saints, churches and monastic history of the area's passed through. Giving you brief but insightful biographies of the principle people/saints of the area, it then does the same with the places - namely churches and the like, before ending with a prayer and a practicalities section that includes short directions, website details and also lists other places to visit as well. I must admit I think this would be a great book to take with you when visiting the north east and would love to one day use it as the basis of a touring holiday.
