In this collection of talks and interviews, previously unpublished in book form, Metropolitan Anthony discusses the nature of Church and what we mean when we speak of the Church as being the body of Christ. He discusses the development of the early Church, its mission and its historical legacy, and offers insights into where the contemporary Church finds itself. He explores what the vocation of the Church should be, and our role within that, with his customary accessibility and simplicity of style.

The only real structure, the only real way in which the Church can be formed so as to fulfil its vocation is by expressing in all its being these relationships within the Holy Trinity: relationships of love, relationships of freedom, relationships of holiness.

In twelve talks, lectures and other writings, some not previously published, the late Metropolitan Anthony reflects on what we mean when we speak of 'Church. They are arranged in five sections; 'The Essential Church - a living Experience', 'Heresy and Doubt', 'The True Nature of Hierarchy', 'Orthodox Christianity in the World' and 'Eucharist'. They cover a period from 1978 to 1993. Bishop Basil of Amphipolis provides a brief and useful 'Foreword' which emphasises that it is only from being within the Church that we can know Jesus. While, at times, he speaks directly to Orthodox Christians (e.g. in a letter to the World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth), at others, he speaks to all Christians (e.g. to the Kensington Council of Churches on 'The Only Revelation of God'). He gets us to 'think outside the box' which is not destructive as when he approaches the fraught topic of 'Primacy and Primacies in the Church' with pastoral, historical and theological insights which are of benefit to all Christians. An excellent encouragement for us all to see whether our notion of the Church actually is the real presence of Christ in the World.
