As it is now 10 years since the Church of England began an experiment in letting children come to communion at a young age, it is now time for a standard work on the subject. This title draws together all the background, experience, theology and resources in order to lead the church to full participation. It includes interviews with David Stancliffe (Bishop of Salisbury), Diana Murrie (National Children's Officer), Mark Russell (Archbishop's Council), Andy Perry (Vicar of Longfleet St Mary, Poole), Stephen Venner (Bishop of Dover) and others. Including biblical and historical overviews, children's perspectives, a review of current resources, the national picture, and a reflection on the Guidelines of the House of Bishops, "Let the Children Come to Communion" is set to become the standard text on this very topical subject.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

The issue of children and communion is a contentious one and both sides need to be treated fairly and courteously. The problem is that in trying, this book does not do so. Let The Children Come To Communion sets out to be a resource for those who wish to open the Communion table to children. Instead it is a reiteration of the history, with interviews from the advocates for children taking communion. It does not tackle practical day to day issues of the Sunday School missing out on the Eucharistic prayers but coming in and joining the rest of the Church during the actual giving out of the bread and wine, thereby missing any form of preparation. Neither is there any real tackling of the issue of Confirmation. Do we follow the Roman Catholic practice of first communion and a later confirmation or what? The Church of England is also attracting many people who believe in baptism of believers not of infants. There is no mention of how children being allowed to take communion works in the light of this belief. Even so Let The Children Come To Communion is a brave attempt to tackle an issue that is often overlooked. Further work and discussion is needed on this issue, and Stephen Lake should be commended for being brave enough to start the process.
