The third volume in the exciting new Interpretation series offers a comprehensive look at the theology of sacraments. For many church people, worship is about preaching and music. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are occasional additions to Sunday services. Recognizing that church-goers are uncertain about the need for sacraments, Ronald Byars describes the possibility that the very doing of worship--the actions observed, the postures assumed, the sound and sight of water, the smell and taste of bread and wine--will subtly alter the temper of the heart and the mind. If we encounter the sacraments honestly, they lead us to the very heart of the gospel.

Those familiar with the Interpretation series of commentaries will be excited to discover that it has been expanded to include themes such as the sacraments. The author of this volume speaks about seeking to ‘consider and reflect upon texts…… that provide an angle of vision that may help us to ponder the multidimensional characteristics of both baptism and Eucharist.’ (page 16) Byars divides the book into nine chapters and three main sections, the first of which is an ‘Introduction’ that has a very helpful discussion on ritual and the use of symbols. The next section deals with ‘Baptism,’ looking at relevant texts from both the Old and New Testaments. The author then moves on to explore the development of the various church practices. The third section on the’ Eucharist’ follows the same pattern. Interestingly both sections end with a very useful pastoral examination of the sacraments witness in death and bereavement. The communal nature of the sacraments is emphasised along with the way in which they give a deeper understanding of the message we believe and preach. Byars is well worth reading as he writes in a way that makes the subject accessible to both preachers and those who enjoy reading theology.
