    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This small, neat book follows a vast array of works designed to introduce new readers to the life and works of Blessed John Henry Newman prior to his forthcoming Mass of Beatification during the Papal Visit to Britain in September 2010. This work, written by the Catholic writer Julien Chilcott-Monk, an author of various introductory volumes, has the merit over most recent writings on Newman in preferring to allow his own ink to take centre stage – the Dream of Gerontius gives the piece its basic shape – rather than simply choosing to produce yet another biography. The patient reader will enjoy rummaging through Chilcott-Monk’s carefully selected gobbets; this said, he might have made better use of Newman’s later writings, for instance Apologia pro Vita Sua, which, though somewhat less poetic, is far more accessible in sections and offers a better appreciation of his Catholicism. All in all, this is a more than useful addition to the multitude of secondary literature forming around a British saint in the making.
