    'The past is another country......The era of the congresses is surely the high water mark for Anglo-Catholicism in the Church of England'. The photographs which the author includes reveal how very alien that era, that church, and those clergy and laity are from the exotic-free C.of E. of the 21st century. His text reveals how genuinely enthusiastic these people were about their faith and their movement, and its practical outworking in their daily lives. The sheer scale of it all, and the numbers involved are very impressive, and Gunstone has done a great service in skilfully condensing the papers presented at the congresses so that a broad understanding of their achievements may be obtained.
