According to the American Medical Association, one quarter of American women will be abused by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. Loving support can make a tremendous difference to survivors as they struggle with the difficult process of healing and regaining trust in themselves and others. Often, however, pastoral caregivers possess the same misconceptions about domestic violence as does the uninformed public. Al Miles addresses the issues related to inadequate pastoral response to this pervasive problem. He explores the dynamics of abusive relationships and the role that clergy members can take to heal this painful situation. The new edition of Domestic Violence builds upon the insights, policies, and programs of the original volume and includes new information on the pathology of domestic violence and the effect the economic downturn is having on victim-survivors and batterers. Miles also focuses on helping clergy and other pastoral ministers develop a more compassionate response to victim-survivors who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. This thoroughly updated edition includes questions for discussion, a list of additional resources, and contact information for state coalitions working to end domestic violence.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is at times a disturbing, even harrowing, book of stories and reflections from a leading US health care practitioner about one of the most difficult of all topics: domestic violence within the fellowship of the church. Yet at the same time it is also a book packed with hope; for Al Miles provides his readers with an accessible guide to how to address a topic that many would rather pass by on the other side. Miles begins with three assertions: no one deserves to be abused; abusers must be held accountable; scripture and the church do not justify abuse. These are excellent principles but with only three pages in the volume devoted to biblical perspectives on domestic violence, more theological reflection is needed. For as the foreword acknowledges, some Christian attitudes towards marriage and headship may help to create an environment in which abuse may remain deeply hidden. Can domestic violence be addressed in such communities without re-examining their theology? Here we have a book whose sub-title is unequivocally correct and I hope its American context (and plentiful additional resources) will not prevent it joining the booklists of every pastoral care course in theological colleges and seminaries up and down the country.
