For Church teachers and leaders

This commentary helps you open up Romans with clarity

The first volume looking at Romans, this commentary offers you insight and understanding

There are very commentaries and there are books on preaching - but very few books that combine elements of both to enable the preacher or Bible teacher to prepare a series on specific sections of scripture.

This series gives the Bible teacher suitable tools to understand the context of Biblical books; doctrinal themes; the methods of interpretation; the key interpretation points and how to communicate that message for the hearer. Whilst very useful for preachers, this book is also aimed at equipping small group study leaders, youth workers and other Bible teachers.

The books are purposefully practical. Section One contains 'navigation' material to get you in the text of Romans. Section 2 works systematically through a suggested preaching or Bible study series. Preaching outlines and Bible study questions are included for each passage.

Christopher Ash is an ordained minister in the Anglican Church and Director of the Cornhill Training Course, a one-year course designed to provide Bible-handling and practical ministry skills to those exploring their future role in Christian work.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a commentary and more. Written from a conservative evangelical perspective, Christopher Ash has written a most helpful book for preachers and teachers. The book aims to give the preacher the tools he needs to preach or teach a series from Romans. Each chapter is brim full of valuable resources. First there is a brief verse by verse commentary, and then a summary of the main themes of the passage, then suggested points of application, then some sermon outlines and finally questions that could be asked at a Bible study. As a pure commentary Christopher Ash’s exposition is sure footed and sound if a little brief in places. He highlights the Greek meaning of words where necessary and is particularly good at showing emphasis that has been lost in translation. The book really comes into its own in the helps it provides to preachers. I like how he transfers the Jewish/Gentile Christian issues into today’s largely Gentile church situation. The points of application are wide ranging and challenging. There are some striking suggested illustrations. The sermon outlines allow for everything from a 3 sermon mini-series to a 42 sermon exposition of the whole book. For the preacher to fully grasp the meaning of Romans, this reviewer suggests you would also need a more in depth commentary (such as William Hendriksen’s), but overall this is a valuable resource and highly recommended for anyone preparing to preach on Romans. Teaching Romans Volume Two – Unlocking Romans 9-16 for the Bible teacher, is ISBN – 978-1-845-50455-7
