Today, many people question the value of preaching. Yet preaching is one of the most awesome callings in the world. Preaching with Humanity considers questions such as:

How can 'old-fashioned' preaching survive in the YouTube culture?
What is the place of preaching in a 'mission-shaped Church'?
How can we preach with humanity - with our fellow human being, not 'to' them, or 'at' them from a height or a distance?

Whether you are new to preaching or building on existing skills, this book will help you in the life-long process of becoming a preacher with humanity.

    The Good Book Stall

The author’s quote with approval the second Helvetic Confession: ‘The preaching of the Word of God is the Word of God.’ Many Christians would disagree. The Confession goes too far. It is unfortunate that St Justin Martyr’s wise words were not also quoted: - after the readings at the Eucharist, ‘when the reader has finished, the president in a discourse admonishes and exhorts (us) to imitate these good things.’ (First Apology, c159 A.D.) The crux of the matter seems to be – by what authority? Preaching without authority is vapid: preaching with only human authority is by definition not preaching. Stevenson and Wright’s detailed analysis of the process of preaching is acute, and their dissection of sermons in various contexts makes uncomfortable reading for some. But preaching needs more than humanity; what about Divine Humanity?
