Zingers are “sentence sermons” – mottoes and sayings that encapsulate spiritual truths in a few words. This author (for long a pastor to the deaf, in New Jersey) tells us that he has used these one-liners in sermons for many years and that often they are remembered more than the other spoken words. British churches often have a “wayside pulpit”, a notice-board outside the church, which holds posters bearing these short sentence-sermons. You know the kind of thing – they’re all here: “God’s promises are always greater than our needs”, “The great use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it”, “Don’t permit Satan to remind you of what God has already forgotten” Some are sentimental, some perhaps exclusively American, and many are meaningful outside any religious context; but if it’s your job to choose material for the wayside pulpit notice-board, you’ll never need another book.
