The 2020 Spring Harvest Theme Book

What can the church today learn from the experience of the early church, particularly as recorded in the Book of Acts?

The early church spread with remarkable speed, impelled by joy, urgency, profound compassion, and the day-to-day experience of working in the power of the Holy Spirit. Despite opposition at all levels, the first Christians expressed their love and wonder in acts of kindness, worship, and their eagerness to share the wholescale transformation that attends the profound experience of conversion.

Gavin and Anne Calver explore what this extraordinary historical account means for believers today, considering themes including: The Holy Spirit in the life of the church; taking risks; living together in the power of the Spirit; works and wonders; hearing from God; responding to the call of God; miracles then and now.

Notes

The early church spread with remarkable speed, impelled by joy, urgency, profound compassion and the day-to-day experience of working in the power of the Holy Spirit. Despite opposition at all levels, the first Christians expressed their love and wonder in acts of kindness and worship, and in their eagerness to share the good news of the risen Jesus.

Gavin and Anne Calver explore what this extraordinary historical account means for believers today, including: the Holy Spirit in the life of the church; taking risks; living together in the power of the Spirit; works and wonders; hearing from God; responding to the call of God; and miracles then and now.

Gavin Calver is CEO of the Evangelical Alliance and an ordained evangelist, regular public speaker and author. Anne Calver is a Baptist minister, speaker and author. Together they have two children, and live in Stanmore, Middlesex.

A clearly and refreshingly put study of the growing church in the book of Acts but one not stuck in the past, not a commentary as such, rather a book that describes how the church of today should be involved. With thoughts gleaned from God's Word, plus personal and honest testimony, Gavin and Anne share the vision that God's Church has no room for standing still, nor should it look back on "the good old days". Rather that the active church, God's church, Christ's Bride, is yet to fulfil His purpose for it. Unleashed to get on with the task, right here, right now.

A book to challenge your way of life and commitment to God. Well written with both authors giving examples from their own faith, experience and life. Much to take in so a chapter a day is enough to focus on

The challenge to assess where you and your church stand in comparison with the church of Acts. To pursue the Holy Spirit's presence to direct our ations.

  • Question
    Linda Morris

Could this book be used in a group study? Would each member have to buy the book or could it be used by the leader to lead a discussion?

    Answer
    Eden Team Member
There's a set of questions for individual use as well as group discussion questions so that it can be used in personal or group study. There are a few pages for each section to go along with the Scripture so we would recommend everyone having a copy, especially if running the study remotely. If there's 10+ copies required, you can call our Customer Service team to ask about vouchers and bulk orders.
